Oscar Cabanas is a managing partner at Wicker Smith and the current chair of USLAW NETWORK. He received a bachelor’s degree in 1981 from Northwestern University. He then returned to his hometown of Miami to attend the University of Miami School of Law, where he received his Juris Doctor in 1984. Always wanting to be a trial lawyer, he was active at the University of Miami in the Mock Trial Program and the Trial Advocacy Program. He was also asked by his law school peers to serve on the Honor Council. In 1984, Oscar began his career in the private sector. Although he has practiced in several different areas of tort law, the majority of his career has been spent defending healthcare providers in medical negligence cases. He is rated AV Preeminent by Martindale-Hubbell and is perennially listed in Best Lawyers in America, Super Lawyers, and other peer review publications. His accolades include having been twice named South Florida’s Defense Lawyer of the Year in Medical Malpractice by Best Lawyers in America (2018, 2022). He was recently named as Lawyer of the Year by Best Lawyers in the overall personal injury defense category for 2023. Oscar had the honor to serve as president of the Miami Chapter of the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA), as well as the honor of serving on ABOTA’s National Board of Directors. Oscar has also served as the Chair of the Trial Tactics Section of the Federation of Defense and Corporate Counsel. Oscar is originally from Cuba and is bilingual. He lives in Miami with his wife and two children.
